Woodrow Wilson 28th President of the United States – Democrat Defeated Taft, Debs, and Roosevelt in the Election of 1912 New Freedom: wanted antitrust legislation and return to small business. This was Wilson’s political platform. It was totally different from T.R.’s the New Nationalism which proposed social legislation and business regulation. Four Progressive Amendments were passed during Wilson’s Presidency: Amendment Year Changes 16th 1913 Allows Congress to collect an income tax Taxed larger incomes at a higher rate. 17th Direct Election of Senators 18th 1920 Prohibition of Alcohol (sale of, consumption of, distribution of or importation of) 19th Women receive the right to vote

Woodrow Wilson 28th President of the United States – Democrat Business Regulation was a success for Wilson: Clayton Anti-Trust Act: (1914) strengthened the Sherman Anti-Trust Act by not allowing companies to buy stock in other companies and create a monopoly and legalized peaceful strikes by labor unions. It aimed to prevent unfair competition. It created a commission to investigate such practices as false advertising and mislabeling by strengthening the government’s power to control business practices that threatened competition. Federal Trade Act: gave power to the Federal Trade Commission to investigate corporations and unfair business practices – wanted to increase competition. Adamson Act: set an eight hour workday for employees on railroads and interstate commerce. (1916)

Woodrow Wilson 28th President of the United States – Democrat Financial Reforms: Underwood Tariff: reduced tariffs on goods for the first time since the Civil War. Federal Reserve Act: created a national banking system, divided into 12 districts Issued Federal Reserve Notes Control money in circulation Control interest rates Shift money from one bank to another as needed. The Federal Reserve System was created in 1913 as the national banking system.

Woodrow Wilson 28th President of the United States – Democrat Women’s Suffrage ( the final victory for the 19th century movement) 1917 – NYS allow Women to Vote Wilson is pressured into changing his views on Women’s Suffrage in 1918. 1919 Congress approves the 19th Amendment granting women the Right to Vote. August 18, 1920 – 19th Amendment is ratified by the states.
