2 Unit 5 Nelson Mandela a modern hero A competition Find the words or expressions from the warming up and the reading of this unit according to what I say.

3 Discovering useful structures
Read the passage again, find out the sentences with attributive clauses. The sentences may be: 1.The time when I first met Nelson Mandela was a very difficult period of my life. 2.The school where I studied only two years was three kilometres away.

4 3.This was a time when one had got to have a passbook to live in Johannesburg.
4.The day when Nelson Mandela told me what to do and help me was one of the happiest days of my life. 5.···until today we have reached a stage where we have almost no right at all. 6.The parts of town where they lived were places decided by white people. 7.The places where they were sent to lived were the poorest areas in South Africa.

5 8.We were put in a position in which we had either to accept we were less important, or fight the government. 9.We first broke the law in a way which was peaceful.

6 Look at page 36. Exercise 1 in Discovering useful structures.
Possible answers: 1.The mines where I worked were 9 km from my house. 2.The reason why I got a job was because of my hard work. 3.The time when I arrived was late at night. 4.The government building where we voted was very grand. 5.The date when I joined the ANC was the 5th of August.

7 Play a game. Let’s get into groups of four. The first person begins with a simple sentence and each person in the group adds extra and different information using the attributive clause.

8 For example: Student 1: The school was very large.
Student 2: The school where I learned judo was very large. Student 3: The school where I studied for six years was very large. Student 4: The school where I was so unhappy was very large. Student 2: (Begin with another sentence.) Student 3: … Student 4: … Student 1: … ●Change places so S2/S3/S4 begins the game with another sentence.

9 Suggested sentences: The village was very beautiful.
The girl is my good friend. The book is interesting. The day was the 7th of November.

10 What we mainly learned today:
The attributive clauses with where and when. Some words.

11 Homework: Finish the exercises in P71.
