1 Warm Up Objective: Scientists will describe the skeletal system (bone identification) by analyzing their choice of activity. 1. What is the topic? 2. What will you be doing? 3. Why is this important? 4. How will you know if you have done well?

2 Warm Up Objective: Scientists will describe the skeletal system (bone identification) by analyzing their choice of activity. 1. What is the topic? Skeletal system/bone identification 2. What will you be doing? Analyzing activity choice 3. Why is this important? Understand more about ourselves; future career choice 4. How will you know if you have done well? Able to describe/identify the bones; completed work

3 Bones What are some bones that you already know the name of?
Who and why would someone want/need to know what the bones are called?

4 Bones--Puzzle At your tables, you have a puzzle.
Complete the puzzle in small groups. Note: there is an “easier” and “harder” version at your tables. What is formed?

5 Bone Types--Reminder What are the five different types of bones?
What are some characteristics of them?

6 Bones--Diagram Throughout today, as you review the bones, write the bone’s scientific name in the space provided.

7 Bones—Activity Choices
Build/draw as indicated. For each choice, you will label the bones with their scientific name. You will find an example of each bone type and explain how you know that it is that type of bone. Take a picture of your completed activity and send to Mini Model Chalk Markers Skeleton costume Model Holographic Bag of Bones For “Mini Skeleton,” you will write a scenario involving a medical examiner or forensic anthropologist. Why would they be examining the bones? How can you use the mini skeleton to “set the scene”? Be sure to use the scientific terms and “layman’s” terms, as well as identifying the bone types. This should be written on lined paper.

8 Wrap Up What bone is this? What type of bone is this?
Why is this useful? Looking at the models, what are some of the bones that are missing? Would you consider them “good” models of the skeletal system? Why or why not?

9 Exit Ticket Clear your tables.
Complete the graphic using the scientific term for as many bones as you can remember. At the bottom of the page, explain how know the scientific term is useful.
