1 Chemical Reactions Sc 3200

2 RECAP! What are the five types of chemical reactions studied in this course?

3 RECAP! What are the five types of chemical reactions studied in this course? Synthesis/ Composition/ Formation Decomposition Single Replacement Double Replacement Combustion

4 What do they all look like? Aka Tricks to remember
Synthesis: - one “+” sign on the left of the arrow Decomposition: one “+” sign on the right side of the arrow Single Replacement: A single element is standing alone on each side of the arrow

5 What do they all look like? Aka Tricks to remember
4. Double replacement:- a “switch” of partners! Check with your periodic table/ list of polyatomic ions for this one! 5. Combustion: - a special form of double replacement but it always has water(_________) and carbon dioxide(______________) on the left side of the arrow.

6 Balancing made easy: We know that in chemical reactions: reactants are not lost from one side of the equation to the other. This is why we need to balance each side according to the law of conservation of mass

7 We start by making a table… or list all of our knowns
CH Cl > CCl HCl C = C = 1 H = H = 1 4 Cl = Cl = 5 8 Note: If there is no number associated with an element (eg ___C) then one is assumed.
