1 Unified Clinical Communication Workshop
Sam Strachan

2 Background What is Unified Clinical Communication?
A UCC device is an iPhone designed with specific features for clinical staff. These include: Applications to perform patient charting Ability to communicate securely with other providers throughout the hospital Applications to administer patient medications Alarms and alerts to be notified of patient needs Retrieve patient lab results at a faster rate

3 Performance Need Analysis
Based on the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey, Michigan Medicine is below average in multiple areas. These consist of: 62% satisfaction of nurse response time to patients 63% satisfaction of explanation of medication administration 46% satisfaction of noise levels during the night hours UCC devices would improve these areas listed above, as well as enable nurses to provide better quality patient care, decrease financial spending on computers, and save time and money discharging patients.

4 Learner Analysis The primary learners for the UCC devices are nurses and nurse managers. The anticipated response to this workshop is the nurses will get acclimated to using the UCC devices and understand how they benefit their daily tasks. Responses could vary from learner to learner, considering their technology skills and their ability to accept change. I anticipate an overall positive response upon the completion of the workshop.

5 Learner Analysis continued…
Demographics Total group size of nurses and nurse managers is approximately 30 nurses to start, with the intent to train thousands in upcoming rollouts. Ages range from years old Predominantly female nurses Varying levels of technical skills Roles Nurses daily tasks include: charting, administering medications, and communicating with various providers. Nurse managers daily tasks include: communicating and delegating tasks to the nurses

6 Learning Outcomes The desired learning outcomes are for the nurses to be able to complete their daily tasks using the UCC devices rather than computers. They will also learn how to communicate efficiently with providers using the device. Due to these learning outcomes, nurses will be able to provide better quality patient care and create an overall more effective daily workflows. Measuring success will be done in multiple ways. Nurses will be asked to complete demonstrations, worksheets, and reflections to ensure they understand the concepts, benefits, and workflows of the UCC device.

7 Content Outline

15 Conclusion Learning Objectives Content Activity
As a result of this half-day workshop, nurses will be able to describe the benefits of the UCC device and how it impacts daily work flow. Content Lecture reviewing main benefits and workflow changes Create better quality patient care Use of UCC devices instead of computers in very scenarios Activity Write down the benefits of the UCC device and how it impacts daily workflow Time 30 minutes Evaluation Reflection

16 Learning Experience – Making Phone Calls
Each learning experience will vary depending on the content and evaluation. For this example, we will be focusing on the communication section of making a phone call on the UCC device. There will be a lecture and demonstration on how to make phone calls. Following this, the nurses will pair up to do a group activity. On the screen, there will be steps shown on how to complete a phone call. The nurses will practice following the steps to complete phone calls to their partners.

17 Learning Experience continued…
It is anticipated there will be a mixed reaction to this learning experience. Certain people enjoy group activities, while others prefer to work independently. I expect the nurses to like the hands-on approach of this activity. The group activity will enforce what was learned during the lecture and demonstration and allows them actual practice with the device. Some nurses may feel uncomfortable performing a group activity. Especially those who lack the technical skills needed to operate the UCC device.

18 Learning Experience continued…
The nurses will be challenged by being asked to demonstrate what they learned in the lecture and demonstration. This activity will challenge the nurses to use a newly acquired skill. This is directly connected to the learning objective of being able to complete a phone call successfully using the UCC device.
