The author juxtaposes Salva in two roles. Which two roles does she juxtapose?
How does this juxtaposition help you compare Salva as a boy with Salva as an adult? What does this comparison suggest about what allowed him to survive? In other words, how are both roles similar, and what do these roles show about who Salva is as a person?
