1 WATER And Solution Formation
Ch. 15 WATER And Solution Formation

2 Water is unique Polar Covalent (Molecular) Compound
Inter Molecular Forces (Hydrogen “bonds”) VERY STRONG (but not stronger than ionic/covalent) Strong Bonds cause : High boiling point Low vapor pressure High surface tension

3 What is vapor pressure??? Defined as the pressure that a substance’s vapors exert when in the solid/liquid state. LOW Vapor Pressure, example: H2O HIGH Vapor Pressure, example: CO2

4 Solid Water (ICE) Unique structure due to H-bond
Ice floats bc of structure Less dense than liquid Open hexagon structure or honeycombed shape

5 Solutions Solvent: Dissolving medium (does the dissolving)
Solute: the dissolved particles (gets dissolved) Solvation: the dissolving process Water is called the UNIVERSAL SOLVENT

6 Crash Course https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9h2f1Bjr0p4
Write 3 things about solutions in your notebook

7 MOLARITY (Concentration)
Molarity = mol / volume (Liters) Ex: What is the molarity of a solution in which 5 mols of NaCl are dissolved in 3.0 L of water? 5 mol/3 L = 1.67 M Ex: What is the molarity of a solution in which 10 mols of CO2 are dissolved in 4 L of water? 10 mols / 4 L = 2.5 M
