1 What is linguistics? Linguistics is the scientific study of language
Are any of the following sentences incorrect? We ain’t got no money. Money have any we don’t. We’ve no money. Linguists don’t judge language; we study how people actually use language. This is a social science class, not an English class! We are all linguistic experts!

2 What is language? Language is something people DO!
It’s a practice and a form of human action, not just a set of rules or a neutral way of communicating thoughts. Language changes Language varies Language isn’t just language. It’s also about our bodies, our clothes, and other symbols and material resources language changes it changes because it works and works because it changes; furthermore, “it” doesn’t just change, but speakers change it, sometimes deliberately, sometimes not). language can also change us, our society, the ways we think, etc. language varies from group to group, speaker to speaker, moment to moment, and even within individual speakers language isn’t just language language doesn’t exist in isolation; it often works with (or against) our bodies, our clothes, and many other symbols and resources to make meaning. So when we study language as linguistic anthropologists, we often also look at other parts of the context and people’s culture. It’s not the same as studying language as an English teacher might.
