1 Waves

2 What are waves?

3 Why do the dolphins use the waves?
Students need to get the idea that the waves are just energy and causes the dolphins to move.

4 Waves A disturbance that transfers energy. Some types of waves require a medium to travel through while others don’t.

5 Medium Matter that a wave travels through (solid, liquid, gas)

6 Sound waves and water waves travel through matter (mechanical waves)
Sound waves and water waves travel through matter (mechanical waves). Other waves, like visible light, microwaves, X-Rays, and radio waves, travel through empty space, as well as through matter (electromagnetic waves)

7 Crest: The peak, or highest point, of a transverse wave
Trough: The valley, or lowest point, of a transverse wave

8 Wavelength The distance from any point on the one wave to a corresponding point on an adjacent wave (ex. Crest to crest or trough to trough

9 Frequency The number of oscillations produced in a certain amount of time. The greater the number of oscillations per second, the higher the frequency. The high the frequency, the more energy carried by the wave. Frequancy is measured in Hertz (Hz)

10 Amplitude The distance a wave oscillates from its resting position (the “hight” of a wave). The larger the amplitude, the more energy carried by the wave.

11 Bigger and faster waves = More energy!!
Amplitude : Frequency :

12 Draw your own wave on your page and label on the parts

13

14 Transverse Waves Waves that travel side to side (up and down)

15 Longitudinal/Compression waves
A wave vibrating in the direction it is traveling

16

17 2 Types of Waves Mechanical Waves Electromagnetic Waves
-Which type do you think goes through a medium and which one goes through open space (vacuum)? What type is a sound wave? A water Wave?

18 Mechanical Waves These waves needs a medium to go through
Air or water Mechanical waves can move either two ways Transverse wave (side to side) Longitudinal waves (compression wave) Examples: Sound Physical waves

19 Electromagnetic waves
These waves don’t need a vacuum to travel through. This means they can travel through space and earth. Electromagnetic waves travel only one way Transverse waves (side to side) Examples: Light Digital waves Analog waves
