4 Rules for Drawing Lewis Dot Structures
•1. determine how atoms are arranged. The first element you see in the formula will be the central atom (except H) •2. Count all valence electrons •3. Make bonds between atoms. It takes two electrons to make a covalent bond. •4. Make octets (8 electrons) around the atoms bonded to the central atom. Keep the electrons in pairs. •5. Place any left over electrons on the central atom. Keep the electrons in pairs. •6. if the central atom does not have an octet, make multiple bonds (double bonds or triple bonds)
