1 Shakespeare’s Sonnets

2 Sonnets Shakespeare’s sonnets were based around the themes of love, beauty, mortality and politics.

3 Sonnets ABAB, CDCD, EFEF, GG
They are always 14 lines long and follow a strict rhyming scheme. ABAB, CDCD, EFEF, GG Shakespeare wrote his sonnets in Iambic Pentameter.

4 Sonnet 130 My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun;
Coral is far more red than her lips' red; If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun; If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head. I have seen roses damask'd, red and white, But no such roses see I in her cheeks; And in some perfumes is there more delight Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks. I love to hear her speak, yet well I know That music hath a far more pleasing sound; I grant I never saw a goddess go; My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground: And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare As any she belied with false compare. Put sonnet here (add on sheets) whizzy negative words Read as a class Find positive/negative image How is it different to what we said sonnets are normally about? REBEL SONNET! (unconventional!) Put sonnet here (add on sheets)

5 Sonnet 130 What imagery does the language create? Is it real love?
Sonnet 130 is the rebel sonnet! What imagery does the language create? Is it real love? Is it reality?

6 The Imagery of Love Think of images that represent love – then twist it! Imagery of love – symbols and twist antonyms of images e.g. rose to weed perfume to rotting bin Summers day – wet windy cold Model love for phil – toilet lid up, lid of toothpaste tube Hog the remote control From beautiful rose... ...to a wet, cold day! From a sunny, hot day... From pretty smelling perfume... ...to rotten apple! ...to ugly weed!

7 Structure My Dad My dad is not superman; he can not fly.
Moans all the time A B C D E F G love hate dove mate dog fray log tray man said tan bed cry lie My dad is not superman; he can not fly. He can not carry the World on his shoulders, But he carries me so high, His stomach is the size of a boulder. Hogs the remote Leaves the toilet lid up My Dad Has a ‘special’ chair Fat and bald! Leaves lid off the toothpaste
