War in the Pacific Japanese Advance: After the Pearl Harbor attack the Japanese achieved quick victories in the Pacific, taking over Malaya, Burma, Indonesia, Singapore, Hong Kong, the Philippines, and the Western Pacific Islands. Turn and Talk to your Partner Why were the Japanese able to advance so quickly? What other areas are in danger of Japanese takeover?

7 Getting Closer to Japan...
The US launched a major offensive on Guadalcanal. Continued victories moved the US closer and closer to mainland Japan. Two last major battles in the Pacific: 1. IWO JIMA- (750 miles from Tokyo) The US bombed for 7 months. 60,000 Marines attacked Feb 23, Marines planted the US Flag 2. OKINAWA- (500 miles from Japan) Last major battle of the war
