1 Data Storytelling Numbers have an important story to tell. They rely on you to give them a clear and convincing voice. – Stephen Few Begun on day 19

2 Introduction Data is constantly being collected about people.
Purchases Friends Searches Locations Making sense of all the information is difficult. Data science allows us to look at data in a concise way. We need to represent the data clearly and accurately.

3 Purpose When we create data visualizations, we should aim for Clarity
Simplicity Attractiveness

4 Data Tells a Story Context is important! Who is your audience?
Exploratory Analysis – we understand the data, but we are looking for points of significance Explanatory Analysis – what you do when you explain the points of significance to someone else Who is your audience? Should you present extremely technical chemical formulas to non scientists? What do you really want them to know? Does what you’re saying help your ultimate point?

5 Data Tells a Story Don’t Only Present One Side Three Minutes
Astute listeners will realize that you’re ignoring alternative explanations Three Minutes Be able to articulate everything you want to tell your audience in three minutes Storyboarding Visually outline your entire presentation and your goals at the beginning, not the end, then build your charts and slide deck from that

6 Effective Storytelling
Its not just the visualizations, but those are important You need three things: Data Visuals Narrative

7 Effective Storytelling

8 The Narrative Often left out, but helps with
Memorability – when presented with data and a story, 5% remember the statistic, 63% remember the story Persuasiveness – nonprofits that use stories to solicit donations are likely to receive up to 2x the amount of donations versus those using infographics solely Engagement – when being presented with statistics, we often refuse to suspend disbelief and nitpick the statistics, stories entertain us so we are less likely to nitpick them

9 Ignaz Semmelweis

10 Reasons Results published Late Curse of Knowledge
Before official publication, results were shared by students who misrepresented claims Curse of Knowledge He forgot what it was like not to know, and hurled insults at critics instead of trying to find common ground to help them understand
