1 Metrics

2 Units of Measurement I. Units of Measurement
-physical quantity of a defined size A. The SI Measurement System 1. SI (Le Systeme International) a measurement systems that scientist world wide have agreed to use.

3 Units of Measurement 2. SI is a decimal (base 10) system
Every unit is 10 times the size of the next smaller unit or 1/10 of the next larger unit.

4 Units of Measurement B. Fundamental SI Units - one that is defined by a constant value which is easy to reproduce and practical in size; All other units can be derived from these units Derived- units combined to make different unit

5 Units of Measurement Fundamental Units 1. length - meter (m)
2. mass - gram (g) 3. time - second (s) 4. volume - liter (L) 5. temperature - Kelvin (K) Celcius (oC)

6 Units of Measurement C. Prefixes milli (m) - 1/1000 = .001 = 10-3
centi (c) - 1/100 = .01 = 10-2 deci (d) - 1/10 = .1 = 10-1 deka (Dk) – 10 = 101 hecta (H) – 100 = 102 kilo (K) – 1000 = 103 kilo hecta deka (fund.unit) deci centi milli

7 Units of Measurement D. Assign each metric unit a mental picture
millimeter - the thickness of a dime centimeter - the width of a little finger meter - the width of an avg. doorway kilometer - the length of 10 football fields

8 Units of Measurement milligram - the weight (mass) of a grain of salt
gram - the mass of an avg. paper clip kilogram - the mass of an adult pair of shoes milliliter - the amount a small eye dropper can hold liter - the amt. of about 4 drinking glasses mass

9 Units of Measurement E. Conversions 10 cm = ______ mm 30 mm = _____ cm
25 km = _____ m 49 cm = _____ m 10.8 g = _____ mg 115 mg = ____ Kg Metrics make me flip! kilo hecta deka (fund.unit) deci centi milli

10 Units of Measurement E. Conversions 10 cm = 100 mm 30 mm = 3 cm
25 km = m 49 cm = 0.49 m 10.8 g = mg 115 mg = Kg Metrics make me flip! kilo hecta deka (fund.unit) deci centi milli

11 Units of Measurement 1.7 L = _____ mL 8 m = ______ mm ______ cm
______ dm ______ Dkm ______ Hm ______ Km kilo hecta deka (fund.unit) deci centi milli

12 Units of Measurement 1.7 L = 1700 mL 8 m = 8000 mm 800 cm 80 dm
0.8 Dkm 0.08 Hm 0.008 Km kilo hecta deka (fund.unit) deci centi milli

13 Meters and Yards are Different!

14 Using a Ruler The English SIDE has fractional parts marks or divisions
(1/2 inch;1/4 inch;1/8 inch; 1/16 inch) marks or divisions Your answer will look like: /8 (make sure to reduce your fractions!) NO DECIMALS!

15 Using a Ruler The metric SIDE has factors of 10 marks or divisions.
Your answer will look like: cm NO FRACTIONS!

16 Reflection Questions 1. Why was the SI system developed?
2. What are the fundamental units of the SI system? 3. If an object is smaller than the fundamental unit what are the possible prefixes? 4. If an object is larger than the fundamental unit what are the possible prefixes? 5. Write Your Own (write a question from the notes and answer it)
