1 UMTAPO STUDENT MOVEMENT (USM)
# FREE THE MIND FREE THE LAND UMTAPO STUDENT MOVEMENT (USM)

2 UMTAPO STUDENT MOVEMENT
End of 2010, a group of tertiary students who had previously been involved in the UMTAPO-driven Peace Clubs at schools, gathered at a strategic planning workshop to articulate a vision, mission and plan of action for the establishment of Tertiary Peace Forums (TPFs). In March 2011, the first of the TPFs were established and launched at the University of Western Cape (UWC). In 2014, discussion around the issue of the name change began to give new impetus to the TPF. Most of the founding members had graduated and the momentum was being lost with student formations that were linked to political parties being dominant. Subsequently, in early 2016, students agreed to a change from the Tertiary Peace Forum to the UMTAPO Student Movement giving it a more solid identity and foundation. And so was born the USM !!! BACKGROUND

3 UMTAPO STUDENT MOVEMENT
A student movement that will aim to create ethical leadership for a more just and caring society that will be free of racism, sexism, corruption, and individualism

4 UMTAPO STUDENT MOVEMENT
Vision We envision a peaceful society in which the core values of UBUNTU are adhered to. In this society, the education system will be free from the ideological stranglehold of any class or group. Mission Our mission is to mobilize students and raise critical consciousness amongst them. We shall do this through public discourse and people-centred development in society in general but in institutions of higher learning in particular.

5 Debates on Democracy, Human Rights, and
USM in Action Debates on Democracy, Human Rights, and Anti-Corruption

6 USM in Action The USM will embrace all students at institutions of higher learning who identify with its founding charter and who are committed to the goals of promoting PEACE and reviving UBUNTU. The USM will not be affiliated to any political party or organisation but instead will work with all student structures on issues of common interest. The USM will remain committed to the creation of a more just and humane society and as such will support community and other outside campus initiatives that act in pursuance of this vision.

7 USM in Action The USM will actively speak out and campaign against RACISM, SEXISM and CORRUPTION The USM will promote popular education as a means to engage with and to mobilise and conscientise the student population at the various institutions. Popular education locates itself within, not outside of, people’s experiences and motivates people to action towards social change. The USM will engage in activities on campus that actively promote dialogue, critical awareness- raising, unity and solidarity, and a sense of pride in being a part of the African continent.
