2 I wanted to start off with a couple of quotes
I wanted to start off with a couple of quotes. I think these statements are very important to remember. Ultimately technology is a tool…it is not an end in itself. But - it is a powerful tool…a tool that has the ability to transform the learning There is no technology that can take the place of your child’s teacher. I am amazed daily at what I see them accomplish with your children.

3 I pulled this little image from the Internet just to reiterate that message a little bit more. When your child is out in the real world, they most likely will not be making prezis, or creating wordles, or publishing animotos. Software will come and go… it is the learning process that they are going through that is important.

4 A Teaching and Learning Initiative
eCLASS A Teaching and Learning Initiative It is difficult to get that discussion going about BYOD without at least talking about the umbrella that BYOD falls under – that being eCLASS. Let me share with you a VERY general overview of eCLASS. One of the most important things for you to remember about eCLASS is that it is NOT a technology initiative (I know we sometimes think technology when we see that e or i before a word) – it is a TEACHING and LEARNING.

Digital - Content, Learning, Assessment & Support System Picture an umbrella with all our current resources underneath it along with new resources and applications to enhance student engagement and the teaching and learning process Note the word resources – simply another word for TOOLS…tools that a teacher can utilize in order to better engage your child in the teaching and learning process. Some of my goals as the LSTC are to: *make sure that teachers know these tools are out there *assist them if they need help in knowing how to use them *and make sure that those tools work on a consistent basis

My eCLASS eCLASS C & I Tool (Curriculum and Instruction) BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) Collaboration Tool Quality Plus Teaching Strategies – Digital Guide When teachers around GCPS currently hear the term eCLASS…these are some of the core tools that come to mind. These may change over time (technology usually doesn’t stand still for long), but right now this is where we are and these are the tools that we are working with.

8 BYOD Bring Your Own Device is a popular and expanding phenomenon in American schools. BYOD refers to technology models where students bring a personally owned device to school for the purpose of learning. The county has provided us with hot spots (wireless access points) in each class to accommodate BYOD.

9 What kind of access will students have?
Internet access similar to what they have when they log on to a school computer. We have GCPS devices in classrooms. BYOD is simply a method of putting more devices into students’ hands.

When students log in through the GCPS network, the same safeguards are in place that are on our school computers. Three tier filter system No student should be accessing the Internet via a “personal” data plan.

18 Preparing Your Student
Can your student do the following independently? Turn the device on and off Start Apps Plug in headphones / Adjust Volume Access a Wi-Fi network from the device Launch the Web browser Navigate using the Web browser Bookmark websites & access those bookmarks Capture a screenshot Take a picture / Record a video Access pictures / Access videos And in many cases we know that you are not necessarily showing your students how to do these things – but please take the time to let your child demonstrate to you that they can perform these basic functions. Look at is as a five minute bonding experience…they will love showing off for you.

20 Final Thoughts We are all learning together!
BYOD is not something that will happen every day and in every classroom (at least not right away)…teachers will use it when it serves a purpose. Please be patient as the teachers learn how to best implement devices using BYOD. Every teacher will look different in terms of their use of BYOD.

21 Next Steps Each student/parent must complete the Personally Owned Devices (PODs) Release Form before students can bring in a device. The next step is to get the “POD” release forms completed for your child and have them bring it to and the device to his/her teacher. The teacher will then have the student bring the device to one of the tech team members, we will confirm that the student has an understanding of how to log on to the GCPS network so that the teacher will not have to worry about these issues during instruction. The tech team member will then sign off on the student’s POD form and return it to the classroom teacher.
