1 Writing an Expositive/Explanatory Essay
ELAGSE7W2: Write informative/explanatory essay texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content. a.introduce a topic clearly, previewing what is to follow; organize ideas, concepts, and information, using strategies such as definition, classification, comparison/contrast, and cause/effect; include formatting b.develop the topic with relevant facts, definitions, concrete details, quotations, or other information and examples. c.use appropriate transitions to create cohesion and clarify the relationships among ideas and concepts. d.Use precise language and domain-specific vocabulary to inform about or explain the topic. e.Establish and maintain a formal style. f.Provide a concluding statement or section that follows from and supports the information or explanation presented. Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. Develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach.

Bell-ringers will be collected 1/31/2019 Bell Ringer: Skip a line, write the date, and answer each of the following questions with a complete sentence(s) response. This weekend you tried to keep a count of advertisements. Approximately how many did you see? 2. What were the sources and which source had the most advertisements for you? 3. Of all of them, which one advertisement was most memorable? Provide details and explain why it was memorable. What are the five advertising techniques AND did it use any? 4. What is the purpose of expository writing? 5. What are the major components of the introductory paragraph? Get your student # computer-log-on Take out your expository writing notes with the topic at the top and the credibility definition.

Prompt: Explain the role advertising plays in the lives of youth. Possible body paragraph topics: 1. Parent/child relationships 2. Health – physical (today’s focus) 3. Health – mental/emotional impact – self-image 4. Spending 5. Amount of ads/time/distraction 6. Influencing kids to want specific products

Write the title of the article Write two pieces of evidence that clearly support how advertising plays a role in young people’s health. Copy and paste the citation to your Noodletools project from last week

5 What would you use for commentary for your evidence?
As a Class – Discuss Say, Mean, and Matter What does the quote/evidence say? What does it mean? Why does it matter?  Example – What would be commentary for the following evidence? “The Nielsen Company tracked the number of food ads that kids saw in It found that kids watched nearly 12 food ads on TV each day. Most of these ads weren’t for healthy foods” ( ). What does this quote mean? What conclusion do you draw after reading the evidence? Why does it matter? Task - Each group will discuss, write, and share an example of commentary they could use for the evidence they have chosen to write on their evidence tracker.

6 While the computer is logging on, watch the following video and discuss with the person/people beside you about the following: 1. Does advertising affect the health of children? In what ways 2. Does advertising make it harder for parents to help their children make healthy food choices?
