2. Total Marine Area Definition:
Total Marine Area can be defined as the foreshore, seabed, coastal water, and air space above the water throughout the whole Turks & Caicos Islands.

3. Protected Marine Area Definitions:
Protected Marine Area (PMA) is any area of intertidal or subtidal land together with its overlying water and associated flora, fauna, historical and cultural features, which have been reserved by law. (World Conservation Union)
Relevance and Use:
They are used as management tools to protect, maintain, or restore natural and cultural resources in coastal and marine waters.

6. Fish Landings Definitions:
Fish landings are the landings at the local docks from the wild.
Boat days refer to the number of days that one vessel was at sea fishing.
(e.g. 1 day out for one vessel is equivalent to 1 boat day)
Man-days refer to the number of days that individuals were fishing
(e.g. 1 day out with 3 people on vessel is equivalent to 3 man-days)

7. Fish Landings cont’d. Relevance and Use:
Fish landing statistics evaluated against the state of the stock and its ability to recover do give an estimate of the environmental impacts of fishing that would have not been otherwise possible if landing statistics were not available.
Data Quality Challenges / Inconsistencies:
In some cases, there are islands who engage in fishing activities but there is no record of their fish landings.
Some fishermen sell directly to hotels and restaurants so therefore there are no records for these catches.

8. Lobster
The figures in the quantity lines reflect total catch, that is, the quantity sold to the fish processors but exclude any direct sales to local restaurants and hotels.

10. Scale Fish
The figures in the quantity lines reflect total catch, that is, the quantity sold to the fish processors but exclude any direct sales to local restaurants and hotels. Scale Fish refers to various reef fish which include species such as groupers, snappers and large pelagic.

11. Population Growth in Coastal Areas
Definition: Population of coastal areas is the percent of the total population living within one hundred kilometres of the Coastline. Relevance and Use: This indicator provides an estimation of the pressures on the environment that will arise as a result of habitation of the coast. It quantifies an important driver of coastal ecosystem pressure, and it also quantifies an important component of vulnerability to sea-level rise and other coastal hazards. Data Gap: The last real set of information was collected during the 2001 census. During the inter-censual period growth would have taken place but there was no survey done to capture this growth.

The data below represent total population and population growth in Turks & Caicos Islands. Turks & Caicos is a relatively small country so based on the standard definition of coastal area, the entire is considered coastal.
