The β,γ-diphosphoryl group of ATP is transferred to ribose 5-phosphate with the generation of PRPP in a reaction catalyzed by PRPP synthase, which is encoded by a prs gene. PRPP is a substrate in a number of substitution reactions, most of which involve a nitrogen-containing compound.
