3 Tokugawa Shogunate Japan borrowed from China during the 5th and 6th centuries forming its own civilization (Sinification) It was a feudal regime of Japan established by Tokugawa & ruled by the shoguns of the Tokugawa family for 300 years. This period is known as the Edo period “Great Peace” It gets its name from the capital city, Edo, which now is called Tokyo.

4 Feudal Japan The daimyo was the leader of the strongest family in that area. Shogun lords were all daimyo: feudal lords with their own bureaucracies, policies, and territories. But not all daimyos were Shoguns Each level of government administered its own system of taxation. The Shogun had the military power of Japan and was more powerful than the emperor, who was a religious and political leader. They kept the daimyo in check through the Hostage system

Seppuku –a ritual suicide for not following bushido 3rd Farmers - were considered important as there was not much fertile land to plant crops, making farms scarce and therefore making food valuable. 4th craftsmen and artisans 5th merchant class because they profited from other peoples labor – like the Chinese
