2 Essential Question How do you solve linear equations?

3 Identity/Properties Symmetric property of equality: if a = b, then b = a Distributive property: a(b + c) = ab + ac or a(b-c) = ab-ac Additive identity: a +0 = a or 0+ a = a Multiplicative Identity: a x 1 = a or 1 x a = a

4 Identity/Properties:
Additive Inverse: a + (-a) = 0 or (-a) + a = 0 Addition property of equality: If a = b then a+ c = b+ c Multiplicative Inverse: a x (1/a) = 1 or (1/a) x a = 1 Multiplication property of equality: If a = b then ac = bc

5 Examples: 2x – 3 = 5 5x + 2x = -32 +12 +2 5x – 3 = 6x+2
