1 Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde through a Freudian lens
The Id, Ego, and Superego

2 The test: Move to the designated spot in the room to answer the following questions. If you are torn between two, choose one.

3 You are driving down the street, when you see a car accident
You are driving down the street, when you see a car accident. People are clearly hurt. What do you do? Get out immediately, to perform CPR and help wherever you can. Keep driving, but call 911 from your car. Keep driving, and yell “Sucka!” from the car window.

4 Take the cash; toss the wallet. DEAL WITH IT.
You find a wallet on the street. There is no one around, and upon inspection, you find $1,000 in cash inside. You: Take the wallet to its owner’s house. After all, their ID is located right inside. Take the wallet to the owner’s house, but ask for a reward. After all, you did have to drive an extra 20 minutes. Take the cash; toss the wallet. DEAL WITH IT.

5 What would you say is your best character trait?
Your kindness and generosity. People often tell you that you are “just the best!” Your reason and ability to find a suitable compromise. Your… Hmmm… people don’t really seem to like you, so much as fear you.

6 Leave it. Stealing is wrong, no matter your situation.
Your family is hungry, and you are out of work. There is a bread cart outside of the bakery, unattended. What do you do? Leave it. Stealing is wrong, no matter your situation. Go inside the store and offer to sweep floors or stock shelves in exchange for a loaf of bread. Steal the bread. Steal the cart. Steal the “open” sign on the door.

7 Your 2 best friends are in a fight, and it’s ruining your week. You:
Sit them in a room together, and encourage them to forget their differences. You’re besties for a reason! Remove yourself from the situation. They will work things out on their own in due time, but you don’t want to get involved. You love the drama! You encourage the fight by telling Susie that Sandy kissed her boyfriend, and by telling Sandy that Susie kicked her puppy.

8 Id, Ego, Super-ego According to a very famous psychologist by the name of Sigmund Freud, the human psyche (or mind) is broken up into 3 sections: 1. Id 2. Ego 3. Super-ego

9 If you answered a lot of questions with #1…
The super-ego is categorized as the part of the psyche that is moral. It’s our conscience. The super-ego is that part of you that convinces you to: Follow the rules Listen to your parents Tell the truth Be a Gallant, not a Goofus.

10 If you answered a lot of questions with #2…
The ego is the part of us that attempts to mediate between good and bad choices It attempts to find a compromise between good and bad. After all, we can’t be perfect or evil 100% of the time.

11 If you answered a lot of questions with #3…
… then you are just terrible. But, I know that none of you are 100% made up of the id, which is the part of us that is not so good. The id is responsible for making selfish, impulsive, destructive decisions such as, but not limited to: Kicking a puppy Failing to return your shopping cart to the return area Not using your turn signals when driving Lying, cheating, stealing, etc.

12 So. Based off of this, let’s connect to Jekyll and Hyde
What part of the psyche might the following characters represent? Dr. Jekyll Mr. Hyde Dr. Lanyon Mr. Utterson
