Operating System Software
What exactly does it do? Manages computer’s hardware (processor, memory, store devices, and peripheral devices (printer)) Correlates the application software with the central processing unit (CPU) Manages, schedules, and coordinates tasks Your operating system is a group of programs that controls how your computer functions. Apple OS X Microsoft Windows Your computer’s operating system is needed to use any function on a computer. The most used operating system is Microsoft Windows. Nikki Schnelker

User Interface You interact with your OS through the User Interface
What is the User Interface? The desktop, icons, and menus that let you communicate with your computer Your user interface is what enables the connection between you and your computer. In other words, without this you would not be able to do anything because your computer would just be a blank screen. Nikki Schnelker

User Interface The 3 types
A command-driven interface is one in which you enter commands to communicate with the computer system. A menu-driven interface is one in which you choose commands from menus displayed on the screen. Graphical user interfaces display graphics and use the point-and-click technology of the mouse and cursor (or human finger), making them much more user-friendly. An example of a menu-driven interface is opening an application on your computer’s home screen with a mouse. Nikki Schnelker

Location of a File What specifies the location of a file?
The file path The file path starts with the drive in which the file is located, included all folders, subfolders (if any), the file name, and the extension. Nikki Schnelker

Device Driver A device driver is a program that enables the device and operating system to communicate with each other The purpose of the device driver Nikki Schnelker

File Name Extensions What are some common file name extensions?
.docx word processing document Microsoft word 2007 and later .xlsl workbook, excel 2007 and later .accdb database, access 2007 and later .pptx presentation, power point 2007 and later .pdf portable document format, adobe acrobat or adobe reader .rtf text (rich text format), any program that can read text documents .txt text, any program that can read text documents .htm or .html (Hypertext Markup Language (HTML)) for a web page .jpg joint photographic experts group (JPEG) image, most programs capable of displaying images .zip compressed file, various file compression programs For question just right down the 3 that are underlined… They are very common ones. File Explorer File Compression- reduces file size Disk Cleanup- removes unnecessary or damaged files Error Checking- checks your hard drive for unnecessary or damaged files Task Manager & Resource Monitor- displays performance measures for processes; provides information on programs and processes running on your computer Disk Defragmenter- rearranges files on your hard drive to allow for faster access of files System Restore- restores your system to a previous stable state File History, File Recovery- Backs up important files, makes a complete mirror image of your current computer setup What Windows utility programs are included in system software, and what do they do?
