2 Quick Write What persuades you to do something? Think about the media - how do advertisements try to convince you?

3 Essential Questions What strategies do people use to persuade others in arguments? Why do people try to persuade others? Goal of the Day: · To be able to define persuasive strategies (ethos/pathos/logos), understand how they work in argumentative writing, and identify them within various commercials and print advertisements

4 Persuasive Techniques
We use persuasive techniques to: convince others to agree with our facts share our values accept our argument and conclusions adopt our way of thinking Why is the targeted audience important?

5 There are four persuasive strategies:
1. logos 2. pathos 3. ethos 4. kronos *

6 Logos Logos appeals to the mind.
It uses logic and facts to persuade the audience intellectually. *

7 Logos = Logical Argument
Appeals to the mind/intellect Includes facts/statistics Studies done by credible sources

8 Pathos Pathos appeals to the heart.
It uses emotions, such as empathy, humor, compassion, or anger to persuade the audience emotionally. *

9 Pathos = Emotional Connection
Appeals to the heart/emotion Personal stories or testimonials Imagery and language which provokes an emotional response

10 Ethos Ethos appeals to ethics and character. It uses morals, authority, and trust to persuade the audience ethically. *

11 Ethos = Credibility Appeal to the writer’s/speaker’s believability, qualifications, character Use of credible sources (experts, scholars) Experience and authority: person knows the issues and has experience in the field

12 Using urgency to strengthen an argument; the audience must act NOW.
Kairos = Urgency Using urgency to strengthen an argument; the audience must act NOW. Examples: This is a one-time offer. You can’t get this price after today. If you don’t save the puppies …

13 1) Smoking is harmful based on the evidence that "Cigarette smoke contains over 4,800 chemicals, 69 of which are known to cause cancer” (Anderson 1). Answer: Logos

14 2) "My mother died of cancer when I was twelve
2) "My mother died of cancer when I was twelve. I saw her pain and suffering which is why I want to support cancer research." Answer: Pathos

15 3) Lady Gaga was more popular than Justin Bieber in 2011 because Gaga's fan pages collected ten million more Facebook fans than Bieber's. Answer: Logos

16 4) "Before I was president,
I was Illinois State Senator.” Answer: Ethos

17 5) “Save 10% on your movie tickets if you purchase them between 4 and 8 pm!”

18 Group Activity Using what you just learned, you will rotate stations, observe various advertisements, and fill out a worksheet with your group. Identify what strategies are used to persuade the reader at each station.
