1 Study on The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB)
CGBN Co-ordination Group for Biodiversity and Nature 3rd meeting - 21/10/08 Agenda item 2.C Study on The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB) - State of Play and Phase II -

2 Origin of TEEB The 2006 Biodiversity Action Plan (Activity B 2.1.2.)
“Strengthen understanding and communication of the values of natural capital and of ecosystem services, and the taking into account of these values in the policy framework, expand incentives for people to safeguard biodiversity” Potsdam initiative for biodiversity (G8+5 Environment Ministers March 2007) “In a global study we will initiate the process of analysing the global economic benefit of biological diversity, the costs of the loss of biodiversity and the failure to take protective measures versus the costs of effective conservation” Launched in Summer 2007 by COM DG ENV and DE BMU

3 Some initial difficulties Global scope Huge complexity of the subject
A global study Some initial difficulties Global scope Huge complexity of the subject Science less mature than for climate change But favourable timing Several biodiversity-related initiatives notably follow-up to the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) Growing interest for the economic significance of benefits from biodiversity / ecosystem services and increasing scientific evidence

4 Phase I Launch of specific studies
Organise web-based call for evidence Appointment of study leader (Pavan Sukhdev from Deutsche Bank) Establishment of high-level advisory board Workshop in March 2008 Input from many experts Presentation of interim report at CBD COP9 May 2008

5 Interim Report Launch was a major success
Highest interest with media, general public, decision makers, etc… Within weeks out of print Reprinted and translated into FR, ES, IT, CZ, PL ‘Road show’ ongoing Download at

6 Phase II content Running until CBD COP10 5 key deliverables (D0-D4)
D0 - “theory” deliverable, global ‘standard’ for ecosystem and biodiversity valuations final version of a valuation framework a valuation methodology evaluation of policy cost D1-D4 defined set of end-user interfaces targeted at D1 policy-makers D2 local administrations D3 business, enterprises D4 individuals/consumers D0 and D1 to be presented in fall 2009

7 Phase II operational structure

8 Outlook Major principles Inclusive and open process Independent
Soundest possible science Next steps New call for evidence launched (until March 2009) Setting up of Secretariat, nominating of study leaders etc… Specific expert meetings and workshops in 2009 Outreach campaign Pavan Sukhdev will need the support from all of you! If TEEB successful, major opportunity to ‘make the case’ for biodiversity
