1 7 Percent

2 R.1 Fractions 7.2 The Percent Proportion Objectives Identify the percent, whole, and part. Solve percent problems using the percent proportion.

3 Identify the percent, whole, and part.
The percent proportion can be used to solve percent problems.

4 Identify the percent, whole, and part.
The fraction is the same as the ratio 3 to 5, and 60% is the ratio 60 to 100. These two ratios are equivalent and make a proportion.

5 Identify the percent, whole, and part.
In order to use the percent proportion to solve problems, you must be able to pick out the percent, the whole, and the part. Look for the percent first, because it is the easiest to identify.

6 Identify the percent, whole, and part.
Identify the percent in each problem. 32% of the 900 women were retired. How many were retired? The percent is 32. It appears with a percent symbol. $150 is 25 percent of what number? The percent is 25. It appears with the word percent. If 7 students failed, what percent of the 350 students failed? The percent is unknown. Example

7 Identify the percent, whole, and part.
The second thing to look for in a percent problem is the whole (sometimes called the base).

8 Identify the percent, whole, and part.
Identify the whole in each problem. 32% of the 900 women were retired. How many were retired? The whole is 900 women. It appears after the word of. $150 is 25 percent of what number? The whole is unknown. If 7 students failed, what percent of the 350 students failed? The whole is 350 students. It appears after the word of. Example

9 Identify the percent, whole, and part.
The third and final thing to identify in a percent problem is the part (sometimes called the amount).

10 Identify the percent, whole, and part.
Identify the part in each problem. 32% of the 900 women were retired. How many were retired? The part of the women who were retired is unknown. In other words, some part of women were retired. $150 is 25 percent of what number? $150 is the remaining number so $150 is the part. If 7 students failed, what percent of the 350 students failed? The part of the students who failed is 7 students. Example

11 Solve percent problems using the percent proportion.
Use the percent proportion to answer this question. 15% of $165 is how much money? Example Set up the percent proportion. n represents the unknown part.

12 Solve percent problems using the percent proportion.
(continued) Example The part is $24.75, so 15% of $165 is $24.75.

13 8 pounds is what percent of 160 pounds?
Solve percent problems using the percent proportion. Use the percent proportion to answer this question. 8 pounds is what percent of 160 pounds? Example Set up the percent proportion. p represents the unknown.

14 Solve percent problems using the percent proportion.
(continued) Example The percent is 5%. So 8 pounds is 5% of 160 pounds.

15 162 credits is 90% of how many credits?
Solve percent problems using the percent proportion. Use the percent proportion to answer this question. 162 credits is 90% of how many credits? Example Set up the percent proportion. n represents the unknown.

16 Solve percent problems using the percent proportion.
(continued) Example The whole is 180 credits. So 162 credits is 90% of 180 credits.

17 How many students is 210% of 40 students?
Solve percent problems using the percent proportion. Use the percent proportion to answer each question. How many students is 210% of 40 students? Example Set up the percent proportion. n represents the unknown.

18 Solve percent problems using the percent proportion.
(continued) Example The part is 84 students, which is greater than the whole of 40 students. This result makes sense because the percent is 210%.
