1 Mitosis and Meiosis

2 Copy this T-Chart in your notebook
Copy this T-Chart in your notebook. While we discuss the difference, write down various characteristics about each cell division type. Mitosis Meiosis

3 Mitosis -Results in two identical cells with each cell having the full amount of genetic information (46 Chromosomes).

4 Meiosis A single cell divides twice to produce four cells containing half the original amount of genetic information (23 Chromosomes).  Gametes (sex cells – Sperm & Egg)

5 Mitosis is a type of asexual reproduction is when a nucleus undergoes cell division in which two daughter cells are formed, each containing a complete set of chromosomes (46 Chromosomes).

6 Meiosis is a type of sexual reproduction
Meiosis is a type of sexual reproduction. A form of cell division that allows offspring to have the same number of chromosomes as their parent. This kind of cell division, which produces gametes (sex cell) containing half the number of chromosomes as a parent’s body cell, is called meiosis.

7 Copy and complete the venn diagram below by comparing and contrasting mitosis and meiosis.

8 Meiosis 4 daughter cells produced
Each daughter cell has half the chromosomes of the parent All daughter cells have 23 chromosomes 2 sets of cell division involved

9

10 Mitosis 2 identical daughter cells produced
Each daughter cell has the full amount of genetic material. All daughter cells would have 46 chromosomes 1 set of cell division involved

11 Similarities Take 2 minutes to come up with similarities between the two and compare with your diagram with your partner’s.

13 Copy the chart below into your SISN.
