The Chemistry of Life part 4: enzymes

Chemical Reactions (CR)
CR = process of changing one set of chemicals to another. -Ex. 4Fe + 3O2  2Fe2O3 (Iron+oxygen=rust) When an organism; Grows Reproduces Moves Interacts with its environment… …Chemical reactions take place!!

Enzymes are Catalysts Catalyst – substance that speeds up the rate of the chemical reaction Enzymes are proteins that act as biological catalysts. They speed up the rate of all chemical reactions that take place in your body Enzymes lower activation energy, The energy required to get a reaction to run

Mechanism of Action Enzymes have a site where reactants can be brought together  the “active site” Enzymes must bind to the reactants – called the substrate Form the enzyme – substrate complex Products are formed

Key Points Enzymes are specific – they will catalyze only a single reaction Shape – lock and key Enzymes are not changed or destroyed in this process. (reused)

What Affects Enzymes Temperature pH Amount of enzyme
Amount of substrate

Recognition • lactase – breaks down lactose (milk sugars) • diastase – digests vegetable starch • sucrase – digests complex sugars and starches • maltase – digests disaccharides to monosaccharides (malt sugars) • invertase – breaks down sucrose (table sugar) • glucoamylase – breaks down starch to glucose • alpha-glactosidase – facilitates digestion of beans, legumes, seeds, roots, soy products, and underground stems

SUMMARY Enzymes are proteins that serve as catalysts for your metabolism (speeding up digestion by lowering the activation energy).

Enzyme and Digestion Student presentation;
1) From your plate to your cells, detailed steps of food digestion. 2) 1-2 Digestive enzymes, where, what, conditions they operate in 3) Roles/processes WITHIN your cells that enzymes facilitate 25 min research,10 min white board, 10 min gallery walk Animation Summation Click HERE
