Before the vote on slavery, people from the North and South moved into Kansas Violence explodes in Kansas “Bleeding Kansas” 1,500 people live in Kansas – but 6,000 people voted

Scott & his owner lived in Missouri then Illinois Can you have a slave in a place that doesn’t allow slavery? Supreme Court Worst decision ever… Scott cannot sue – you are property, not citizen Government cannot take a person’s property (5th) Congress had no power to ban slavery anywhere in US

Sectionalism – Congressmen from the North and from the South fought over tariffs, policies and what is best for their state and not best for the country States Rights – North believed the federal government should be the most powerful, while the South believed that States should be the most powerful Slavery – North (free) vs. South (slavery)
