1 Thursday Do Now Directions: Enter the classroom, log onto Blackboard and click on the Starting Line for today. Answer the questions below on the Google Form. You have 4 minutes to do this. No starting line today. I am planning on returning Friday… See you then!

2 Earth and Space Science
Unit 3: The Rock Record and Geologic Time Daily Objective: I can discuss the major events that took place on Earth.

3 Notebook Notes Directions: In your document, write the following information in this order on the LEFT SIDE. (Your Name) Mr. Swisher Earth and Space Science _____ (Period) 10/6/2016

4 Notebook Notes Directions: In your document, write the following information in this order in the CENTER in BOLD. Precambrian Time, Paleozoic Era, Mesozoic Era, and Cenozoic Era

5 Precambrian Time-Earth
Precambrian Time began 4.6 billion years ago (bya) and ended 542 million years ago (mya), taking up about 88% of the Earth’s history/time. Earth was covered in oceans and volcanoes. The continents were covered in rock.

6 Precambrian Time-Earth

7 Precambrian Time-Life
Tiny cyanobacteria were the first living things to exist.

8 Precambrian Time-Life
Closer to 600 mya, larger multi-cellular organisms called Ediacarans began to exist.

9 Precambrian Time-Life
Also, near 600 mya, early sponges, corals, jellyfish, and flatworms began to exist. However, these early forms looked different than they do now.

10 Phanerozoic Eon This time period contains 3 eras. Paleozoic Era
Mesozoic Era Cenozoic Era

11 Paleozoic Era The Paleozoic Era began 542 mya and ended 251 mya.
During this time, the continents formed one large continent called Pangaea. Mountain ranges also began to form.

12 Paleozoic Era-Earth

13 Paleozoic Era-Life Many marine (ocean-living) life-forms existed.
Most of these creatures were invertebrates, or “without backbones.” Shelled organisms called brachiopods also existed.

14 Paleozoic Era-Life

15 Paleozoic Era-Life In the later periods of this era, vertebrates (“with backbones”) began to exist. Most of these creatures lived in the oceans and resembled fish or amphibians. One type of fish, the lungfish, could actually breathe air!

16 Paleozoic Era-The End At the end of this era, the temperature began to rise and forests and swamps covered the Earth. The era ended with a mass extinction (death) of many of the life forms. However, some pretty cool ones will be making an appearance soon…

17 Mesozoic Era The Mesozoic Era began 251 mya and ended 65.5 mya.
This era is called the “Age of the Reptiles.”

18 Mesozoic Era

19 Mesozoic Era-Earth During this time, the continents began to drift apart again. This caused even MORE mountains to form.

20 Mesozoic Era The Mesozoic Era is divided into 3 periods. Triassic
Jurassic Cretaceous

21 Mesozoic Era-Dinosaurs
Triassic Period: Dinosaurs ruled the Earth during this period. Jurassic Period: Bird-hipped and lizard-hipped dinosaurs lived during this period. Cretaceous Period: The Tyrannosaurus Rex (T-Rex) lived during this period.

22 DINOSAURS

23

24 The Extinction About 65 mya, scientists believe that a giant asteroid hit the Earth in the Gulf of Mexico. This caused the formation of an ejecta cloud of dust, gas, and sand that blocked out the sun’s light and caused everything on Earth to slowly die.

25 The Extinction

26 The Extinction-Other Theories
Ice Age New Diseases Volcanic Eruptions Changing Sea Levels, Floods Meteor Shower

27 The Cenozoic Era The Cenozoic Era began 65.5 mya and is the era we are in right NOW! This era is called the “Age of the Mammals.”

28 The Cenozoic Era-Earth
During this era, the continents moved into their current positions on the Earth. Also, the climate changed drastically during this time. Think: ICE AGES!

29 The Cenozoic Era This era is divided into 2 periods.
The Tertiary Period began before the last ice age. The Quaternary Period began after the last ice age and includes the present time.

30 The Cenozoic Era-Tertiary Period
During the Tertiary Period, new mammals evolved. Examples: Rodents, primates, horses

31 The Cenozoic Era-Quaternary Period
During the Quaternary Period, many “famous” mammals began to appear Although, some of these do die out. Examples: Saber-tooth tigers, wolves, woolly mammoths, HUMANS!

32 Geologic Time as a Football Field??
