1 Warm Up 10 4/6 Write about your spring break.
How did BIOLOGY play into your spring break?

2 4.1 The Role of Climate Notes
Weather: day-to-day condition Climate: average, year-after-year condition Weather Los Angeles Alaska Australia Climate Warm-hot, cooler winters long cool winters, short summers desert, semi dry

5 The Role of Climate Climate is important in shaping ecosystems. Species of plants and animals vary in their adaptations to environmental conditions as well as their tolerances for conditions outside of their normal ranges. 5

6 Climate is caused by Trapping of heat by atmosphere Latitude
Transport of heat by winds and ocean currents Precipitation Shape & elevation of land

7 1) Greenhouse Effect: natural situation in which heat is retained by layer of gases (Carbon dioxide, methane, water vapor)

8

9 a. Earth is tilted on its axis which causes solar radiation to strike part of the Earth at angles that vary through the year 2) Latitude

10

11 Polar zones- sun strikes at low angle, cold (North/South Pole)
Temperate zones- hot to cold, most effected by seasons Tropical zones- direct sunlight year round, always warm

12 3) Heat Transport Unequal heating drives winds & ocean currents
Warm air rises, cold air sinks

13

14

15 Similar patterns in ocean currents
Water is also moved by winds Ocean currents warm/cool air above it
