1 PHYSICAL SCIENCE 436 Teacher: Daniel Yaw A. Afriyie
SLAC Math & Sciences

2 PHYSICAL SCIENCE 436 3 modules PSC 4010 NUCLEAR TECHNOLOGY
PSC IONIC PHENOMENA PSC ELECTRICITY

3 Purpose of Physical Science Program
Is to better inform you about Energy Related Issues in our society and Teach you the fundamentals of Chemistry and Physics.

4 PHYSICAL SCIENCE 436 3 modules Grade PSC 4010-2 NUCLEAR TECHNOLOGY
PSC IONIC PHENOMENA PSC ELECTRICITY Grade The Final exam of each module has 2 components that are scheduled on different days. To pass a module, the combined score from the two components must be greater than or equal to 60%. A successful completion of each module gives the student 2 credits.

5 PHYSICAL SCIENCE 436 COURSE materials and requirements
Course pack(optional): Buy one at a time at the book store. PSC 4011 is the Second module. Note book and or a pad of papers Scientific calculator : you must know how to use your calculator

6 PSC Lesson will be mostly in lecture form and questions are welcomed at any time. Lesson notes may be printed and handed out at the beginning of class or may be presented on the board and students will have to copy it by writing or taking a snap shot of the screen with a camera. Most of the lessons will be recorded and posted online Experiments and demonstrations are part of this course. If one is absent he or she is responsible for the material and home work given on the day. Make some friends before it is too late. If a student does not complete an assignment/home work, the student may be asked to leave the class and return with the home work completed*.

7 Final grade of each module will include
All regulations of SLAC are respected in this class. Home works and Quizzes (unannounced) To write the Final Exam Students must complete all assignments and must obtain a 75% or higher average on all quizzes and assignments or pass the Final Quiz with 75% Final grade of each module will include Exam II Exam I Rewrites A student who scores 50 to 59%, inclusively, is eligible for rewrite if the student has not missed more than 25% days of classes and has completed all assigned works.

8 PSC 4010 (May 26-June 30, 2016) Exam II-Reading Comprehension  22%
Grading scheme: Exam II-Reading Comprehension  22% June 21, 2016 Exam I-Final Exam 78% June 23, 2016

9 PSC 4010 Nuclear Technology
Lesson 1- Introduction: Defining the Debate

10 PSC 4010 – Nuclear Technology
Energy Is the ability to do work. Many forms ( thermal (heat), chemical(bleach), magnetic (repulsion), elastic (Springs),....

11 Energy Energy is measured in many units:
Joule. The SI unit for energy is named after Prescott Joule an English Physicist. Calories, British thermal Unit, electron volts, Kilowatt hours are all units of energy.

12 Energy through ages Energy use increased with evolution and more efficient energy sources were required to keep up with the increase need for energy. Wood was the primary source of energy. Gradually coal supplanted wood Gas and oil replaced coal gradually

13 Energy consumption in Quebec
Quebec is one of the world’s leading energy consumers Ton Equivalent Petroleum

14 The types of energy consumed in Quebec has changed over the years Before 1993 mostly oil After 1993 and now  mostly electricity biomass: plant material and animal waste used as fuel; sawdust, sugar cane(for ethanol), algae (for oil)

15

16 Modern society: residence use many electrical appliances
Electricity consumption in Quebec 2nd largest average per capita consumption of electricity in 1991 Reasons for this: Modern society: residence use many electrical appliances Electricity is cheap Industrial society The shift from oil to electricity

17 Electricity consumption per sector
Electricity consumption per sector Industries consume the most, followed by residential and lastly commercial. (page 1.7)

18 Smelting (iron works) and pulp & paper are responsible for most of the electricity consumption in Quebec. (see page 1.10)

19 ENERGY PRODUCTION IN QC
Quebec produces electrical energy using Hydroelectric power plants ( Second largest producer in the world) Wind turbines (Gaspé) Oil and Natural gas (Cadillac,Bécancour) Nuclear power plants (Gentilly) Biomas (Témiscaming mill)

20 PSC 4011 Electricity what’s the connection?
Types of Electricity Generating stations
