1 How can we use models to help us think about electricity?
14 April 2019 How can we use models to help us think about electricity? Key terms: current, conductor, insulator I can define the terms: conductor and insulator and give some examples of each Secure: Develop: I can use a model to describe how an electrical circuit works. Exceed: I can evaluate the use of models in Science. Starter: Identify the components in the following circuits.

2 STARTER: What components are in this circuit?
3V Battery Light bulb Switch Wires

3 EXTENSION: What does an ammeter measure?

4 What is a conductor? If the centre of this wire is a conductor, what must it do? What types of material might be conductors?

5 What is a insulator? The plastic coating on a wire is known as an insulator. What do you think an insulator does?

6 Define the terms electrical insulator and electrical conductor.
TASK: Applying your learning M – class book I – individually N – quietly T – 8 mins Bronze Silver Gold Define the terms electrical insulator and electrical conductor. Describe the terms electrical insulator and electrical conductor giving examples. Explain how both conductors and insulators are used in wiring for electrical appliances. EXTENSION: Explain what would happen if we did not have an insulating material on wires.

7 How are models used to help us think about electricity?
Circuit – anything electrical energy flow through in a continual manor.

8 How are models used to help us think about electricity?
Cell / battery – Transfers energy to the charges and pushes them around wire. Wire – All of the charges stay in the wires. Circuit – anything electrical energy flow through in a continual manor. Bulb – Energy is transferred to the room by light and heat.

9 EXTENSION: Explain why we use models to help us to explain circuits.
TASK: Applying learning M – diagram I – individually N – quietly T – 10 mins Stick in your diagram Bronze Silver Gold Label the parts that represent the battery, wires and bulb and describe how. Use the help sheet descriptions to label your diagram showing how the central heating system models a circuit. Label each component of the model and explain in your own words how it represents a circuit. EXTENSION: Explain why we use models to help us to explain circuits.

10 Secure: Develop: Exceed: Confidence Check Not confident In between
Super confident I can define the terms: conductor and insulator and give some examples of each Secure: Develop: I can use a model to describe how an electrical circuit works. Assess pupils by asking them to express their confidence in their achievement from 1-5 for the lesson aims. Exceed: I can evaluate the use of models in Science.

11 Plenary: How does this model a circuit?

12 Plenary: How does this model a circuit?
