1 Forces What did you pull ?

2 Remember Pythagoras ? He had a lot to do with these things c
a2 + b2 = c2 b a

3 Remember SOHCAHTOA ? c b  a So in terms of cos a= in terms of sin b=
Hint :write the word theta in terms of sin b=

4 Lets find the missing lengths on it.
Here’s a triangle Lets find the missing lengths on it. 25  = 25º Opposite = Type in the equations you got Use the word theta Adjacent = And your answers to 3 d.p. Opposite = Adjacent =

5 Find the missing lengths
You have 5 mins to do as many as you can Click here for answers

6 Forces acting at a point can be treated as right angled triangles
When these 2 forces act on the same point marks the spot these 2 forces can be replaced by one pink force No Chris the colour isn’t important ! With right angled triangles you can use Pythagoras to find missing sides and angles. The same is true for forces. ?2 = ? = 8.06 ? 4 So the resultant force is 8.06N 7

7 Find the resultant of these forces answers in Newtons to 1 d.p.
Check here 6N 32N 15N 58N 1N 21N

8 What angle are these forces acting at ? The first one is done for you.
θ 9N 8N 11N tanθ= 7 ÷ 8 θ = tan-1(7÷8) θ = 41.2º Your Turn Now Go! Answers to 1 d.p. No degree symbol 6N 32N 15N 1N 58N 21N

9 Of course you can ! This time we use trigonometry.
What if you get the resultant and an angle ! Can you find the horizontal and vertical components of the force ? Of course you can ! This time we use trigonometry. Look back to your answers for this question. Equation = Answer = So the vertical component of the force is: equation = answer = 12N V And the horizontal force is ? ? ? ? 38º equation = H answer =

10 Easy isn’t it. Now lets add some direction to your lives!
Find the horizontal and vertical components of these resultants. 4N 15N 7N 85º 48º 21º 32N 18N 9N 22º 35º Click here for answers

11 You’ve finished Or have you ?
