1 Weather and Climate Section 22. 3

2 Wind Pressure gradient: when air pressure varies, the air will move to an area of high pressure to low pressure = wind! Coriolis Effect: curved paths of wind due to Earth’s rotation Reason we have predictable wind patterns

3 Winds in Northern Hemisphere curve clockwise.
Winds are named for the direction in which they come from Winds in Northern Hemisphere curve clockwise. Winds in the Southern Hemisphere curve counterclockwise. Cells: three loops in both hemispheres Created because of differences in temperature

4 Front: boundary between two air masses
Air Mass: large body of air with a constant temperature and moisture content throughout Front: boundary between two air masses Cold: blue line with triangles Warm: red line with semicircles Stationary: alternating blue and red line with triangles and semicircles

5

6 Fronts bring a change in temperature and wind direction
Warm Front: warm air pushed over cool air slowly cirrus and nimbostratus clouds steady precipitation Cold Front: cold air moves under warm air quickly cumulonimbus clouds high winds and thunderstorms

7 The average weather over a long period of time.
Climate The average weather over a long period of time. Why do we experience a change seasons?
