1 Aim – How can we represent quantities graphically?
Lesson 4

2 Making a Graph What is the purpose of a graph? Graphs allow you to quickly and easily compare the results of an experiment Who uses graphs?

3 What are the different types of graphs?
Line Graphs Bar Graphs Pie Charts

4 Graph- is a visual display of data.
Graphing Graph- is a visual display of data. independent variable- is the variable that you can control (x-axis/ horizontal) the “I changed it variable” dependent variable- is the variable that changes accordingly with the independent variable (y-axis/ vertical)

5 Identify the independent and dependent variable
Steps to create a graph Identify the independent and dependent variable Determine the range of the data that needs to be plotted for each axis. Number and label the data points. Plot the data points. Draw the best fit line Give the graph a title.

6 Graphical Relationships – How one variable changes based on the other
Direct Relationship: increases As one variable increases, the other __________________.

7 Direct relationship What are some examples you can think of?

8 Graphical Relationships
Indirect Relationship: decreases As one variable increases, the other __________________

9 Indirect Relationship
What are some examples you can think of?

10 Graphical Relationships
Cyclic Relationship: As one variable increases, the other changes in a predictable pattern Events that are cyclic are also ___________________ predictable

11 Cyclic Relationships Tides Phases of the Moon Examples

12 Graphical Relationships
No Relationship: stays the same As one variable increases, the other __________________

13 Graphical Relationships in Words
State in words the relationship between relief and the average rate of erosion as shown in the graph. As relief increases, the average rate of erosion increases

14 Graphical Relationships in Words
State in words the relationship between air temperature and relative humidity. As the air temperature increases, the relative humidity decreases
