3. Step #1: Observations (specific)
What do you SEE?
Only state what can be directly found on the data sheet.
For example:
I only got 50% of the questions correct. Or
I did not master any standard.
I got 1 out of 3 correct in the “Depth of Knowledge: 3- Strategic Thinking” area.

4. Step #2: Interpretations
What does the data SUGGEST?
What are the assumptions I can make about my learning?
What are the assumptions I can make about my thinking during this test?
For example:
I did not understand the “Awakening” passage. Or
I do not understand how to find the central idea of a text.
I do not understand how to interpret the author’s point of view.
I understand the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text.

5. Step #3: Implications (big picture)
What are the implications of this work for teaching and learning this year?
What is the “take away” from this data?
What instructional steps could I take next with you?
What does this conversation make you think about in terms of your own learning? About teaching and learning in general?
For example:
I need to work on reading comprehension. Or
I need to focus on how to understand author point of view.
I need to spend time this semester practicing figurative language using USA Test Prep & through annotations.

In sentences, reflect on areas of improvement for this year; areas you have already mastered; and some academic goals you’d like to set for yourself.
Were you pleased with your pre-assessment grade?
Did you take it seriously? Why or why not?
Is there something in particular you want to focus on this year? (i.e. writing, figurative language, etc.)
