3 Learning Goals Objectives Essential Question Discuss research findings related to wellness and exercise, social ties, and longevity. Explain the relationship between wellness and flow experiences, happiness, and optimistic explanatory styles. Discuss the negative effects of smoking and obesity on wellness. Describe how set point and metabolic rate interact to make it difficult to lose weight and maintain weight loss. What would our cultural leaders have to do to make psychological immunizations more important to the public?

4 Wellness Wellness: Common result of a healthy lifestyle and healthy attitudes. Martin Seligman: Psychologist and proponent of positive psychology Positive Psychology: Subfield of psychology that focuses on the study of optimal human functioning and the factors that allow individuals and communities to thrive. Flow: State of optimal experience that involves a challenge, requires skill, has clear goals, and provides feedback.

Exercise 30 minutes a day reduces likelihood of depression Family Non-divorced affected children live 4 years longer (avg.) Friends: Less likely to die prematurely Religious Faith Less immune system suppression, stress hormones, and suicide

6 Mood & Weight Explanatory Style
Habits we have for thinking about the good or bad causes of events. Body Mass Index (BMI) Your weight in kilograms divided by your squared height in meters. BMI under 25 considered healthy. Set Point Individual’s “weight thermostat”—when the body falls below this weight, an increase in hunger and a lowered metabolic rate may act to restore the lost weight.
