8 Part 1 How a baby is made rshp.scot

9 How a baby is made. A baby is made by grownups. To make a baby you need a tiny little egg from a woman and you need the seed (called the sperm) from a man. rshp.scot

10 How a baby is made. A mummy’s eggs grow inside her body, inside a part called the ovaries. Every month a woman makes an egg. rshp.scot

11 How a baby is made. A daddy’s sperm is made in his testes which are inside the bag of skin that hangs behind his penis. rshp.scot

12 How a baby is made. When the egg and the sperm come together they can start a baby. This is called fertilisation. The mummy’s egg and the daddy’s sperm can come together in different ways. rshp.scot

13 How a baby is made. One way is that the woman and man love each other and they have sex, this is a special thing that grownups can do. When they have sex the man’s penis goes inside the woman’s vagina and sperm comes out and goes to meet the egg inside the woman’s body. rshp.scot

14 How a baby is made. Another way is that a doctor can help, so for some babies they start when the egg and sperm come together in a hospital and the doctor puts the egg back into the mummy. Another way is that some babies come together when a man gives his sperm to the woman and she puts it in so that she can make a baby. rshp.scot

15 How a baby is made. Once the egg and sperm get together, then the egg lives in the mummy’s body in a safe place called the womb and starts to grow. So now the woman is pregnant. She will be pregnant for 9 months. Let’s watch this short film: Human reproduction (Duration 1 minute 3 seconds) rshp.scot

16 Part 2 The baby grows - Pregnancy
rshp.scot

17 The baby grows: Pregnancy
A baby lives and grows inside the mummy’s womb for 9 months. It gets all the food and drink it needs to grow from the mummy. The baby and mummy are connected together by a special cord called the umbilical that attaches to the baby where your belly button is – more about that later! rshp.scot

18 The baby grows: Pregnancy
For the baby, the womb is like a bag of warm cosy water and the baby can hear the mummy’s heartbeat like a drum. rshp.scot

19 The baby grows: Pregnancy
When a woman is pregnant she will go to see the doctor and nurse every now and then to make sure everything is going well with her pregnancy. The mummy can take her partner or friend with her. Sometimes the mummy gets a picture of the baby inside her. rshp.scot

20 The baby grows: Pregnancy
In the first 3 months inside the mummy’s womb the baby is very small. After 1 month the baby is just the size of a pea. Then the baby begins to grow arms and legs. The baby has a little beating heart. By the second month the baby has grown fingers and toes. rshp.scot

21 The baby grows: Pregnancy
In the next 3 months inside the mummy’s womb the baby keeps growing. By the 4th month the baby is the size of the mummy’s hand. The baby can start to hear. The mummy will start to feel her baby moving around inside. rshp.scot

22 The baby grows: Pregnancy
In the final 3 months inside the mummy’s womb the baby keeps growing, so much that it needs to be curled up inside the womb. The baby’s brain grows all this time too. The baby is getting stronger and getting ready to be born. rshp.scot

23 Part 3 How a baby is born rshp.scot

24 How a baby is born. After 9 months of being safe and cosy inside the mummy’s womb it is time for the baby to be born. The baby changes its position so that the head is downwards getting ready to come out. rshp.scot

25 How a baby is born. The mummy feels some pains in her tummy and she feels the need to push down so that the baby can come out. rshp.scot

26 How a baby is born. The baby comes down from the womb and it comes out of the mummy’s vagina. This take a few hours to happen. Nearly all babies are born this way but some babies can’t be born like this and a doctor has to make an opening in the mummy’s tummy to lift the baby out – this is called a Caesarean. rshp.scot

27 How a baby is born. The mummy will be very tired after all this effort. And the baby will cry as it leaves the cosy womb and enters the world. rshp.scot

28 How a baby is born. Remember that the baby feeds through the umbilical cord? Well this is cut (its not sore) and then the baby is separate from the mum. This leaves you with your belly button! rshp.scot

29 How a baby is born. Some babies are born in hospital. Some babies are born at home. A partner or friend or other family member can be there to help and support the mummy. rshp.scot

30 Isn’t this an amazing story!
