2 Capture of Goliad Texans wanted to take control of Goliad (Presidio La Bahia) The Mexican fort was half way between San Antonio and Corpus Christi Texans must take the fort to take control of South Texas General Cos left his army’s supplies and silver at Goliad while he gathered more troops

3 Capture of Goliad Cos only left 27 soldiers to guard the supplies
120 Texans, including Ben Milam and 30 Tejanos, made a surprise attack at night on Goliad Took control of the Mexican fort at Goliad Battle lasted 30 minutes and no Texan died – one wounded

Texans called for a meeting to discuss the future of Texas Meeting was called the Consultation Met at San Felipe in November 1835 58 delegates were divided on whether to stay or revolt against Mexico Tejano Juan Seguin joined the Texans’ revolt

Delegates came up with compromise Fighting for Mexican Constitution of 1824 Wanted Mexico to return to a federal system Set-up a Provisional Government This included a governor and a legislature called General Council

Henry Smith chosen as governor – supported freedom from Mexico General Council supported the Mexican Constitution of 1824 Consultation chose Sam Houston to be in charge of the regular army Regular army would include cavalry and infantry

7 Siege of San Antonio General Cos arrived in San Antonio with 800 troops on October 9, 1835 Instead of attacking, 600 Texans began a siege on Cos’ troops They did not let food or supplies in for 8 weeks In December 1835, Ben Milam and 300 Texans attacked before dawn

9 Siege of San Antonio On the third day, Milam was killed
On the fourth day, Cos surrendered Cos’ troops were set free after pledging never to return to Texas Texans beat a force 3x their size and celebrated their victory Texans thought fighting was over and Mexican Army was weak….NOT!
