2 Mexican Army Arrives in Texas Gonzales- “The Lexington of Texas. When General Cos and his army came into Texas, settlers formed Committees of correspondence. Which are- local groups sharing political and military information. The first battle between Mexican troops and the Texas colonists. Date: Colonel Ugartechea the Mexican commander at San Antonio ordered the people of Gonzales to : surrender their small brass cannon. The People: buried the cannon in a peach orchard until reinforcements came. Once reinforcements arrived the Texans: The White flag said: “Come and Take it!” SECTION 1 : REVOLUTION BEGINS

3 On to San Antonio On October 9 th : A force of 120 Texans took the garrison at Goliad by surprise They battled for (how long): About 30 minutes Ending Result: Mexican Troops surrendered This convinced many Texans that: Mexican Troops could be defeated easily Stephen F. Austin: was called upon to take command of the 300 Texanas assembled at Gonzaels, known as the Army of the People. SECTION 1 : REVOLUTION BEGINS

4 Peace Party Prevails at the Consultation A Provisional Government Begins Consultation begins on: November 3, 1835 War Party favored: an immediate declaration of independence from Mexico Peace Party objected to: an immediate declaration of independence. “Declaration of the People of Texas in General Convention Assembled” Stated: 1. Declared themselves loyal citizens of Mexico 2. Pledged : to support the Mexican Constitution off 1824 3. Declared: they had taken up arms only to defend themselves and to oppose the rule of Santa Anna. Provisional Government means: temporary government The Regular Army was to be commanded by: Sam Houston Who was born: In Virginia

5 SECTION 2: THE CAPTURE OF SAN ANTONIO The Grass Fight The Assault on San Antonio Texans attacked: a mule train Because: they thought it held silver to pay the Mexican Soldiers They found: grass for the Mexican’s horse Ben Milam said: “Who will go with old Ben Milam into San Antonio?” Mexican Army was equipped for: fighting only on open balttlefields Texans Won when Cos asked for: surrender terms on December 9 th.

6 SECTION 3: THE CONVENTION OF 1836 Santa Anna Crosses into Texas The Convention Declares Independence The Delegates Write a Constitution Santa Anna crosses the Rio Grande and arrived in San Antonio on: February 23 Texans still remaining in San Antonio move Into the Alamo. Begins work on: March 1, 1836 Writer of the Texas Declaration of Independence: George C. Childress Which was similar to: the US Declaration of Independence Texas Independence Day: March 2, 1836 Executive Branch: Chief officer of a government Legislative Branch: lawmaking body; congressional Judicial Branch: courts of law or the justice system
