Presentation on theme: "Use pp to fill in your GRAPHIC ORGANIZER."— Presentation transcript:

1 Use pp. 43-51 to fill in your GRAPHIC ORGANIZER.
Do as much as you can. We will review this together in about 10 minutes.

2 Physical Properties Physical Properties Thermal Conductivity State of matter Malleability Ductility Solubility Density Color, Texture MP, FP, CP, BP Read pp A PHYSICAL PROPERTY of matter can be… observed or measured without changing the identity of the matter Examples: 1. Socks - odor 2. Aluminum can be pounded into sheets to make foil 3. Sugar dissolves in water Ex – apple – can see it is red (color)

3 Chemical Properties Chemical Property Read p. 47
Chemical Bonds made or broken Reactivity to other things Not as easy to observe Flammability Read p. 47 CHEMICAL PROPERTIES describe a substance based on… its ability to change into a new substance with different properties Examples: 1. WOOD – flammability (can be burned to create smoke and ash) 2. IRON – non-reactivity with oil/gas, reactivity with oxygen (rust)

4 Physical vs Chemical Changes
Physical Change Chemical Change Definition (p. 48) Change that affects the physical properties of a substance – does NOT form new substances Can physical changes normally be undone? (p. 49) YES, they are usually easy to undo Definition (p. 49) One or more substances change into new substances with different properties Can chemical changes be undone using physical means? Explain. (p. 51) NO, cannot be reversed using physical means Can be reversed under the right conditions by other chemical changes

5 Physical vs Chemical Change
Physical Change Chemical Change Examples of Physical Changes Melting butter Dissolving sugar in water Freezing an ice cube Sanding wood Cutting your hair Crushing a can Bending a paper clip Mixing oil and vinegar Are Chemical Bonds Broken or Formed? NO! List clues a chemical change occurred Color change Fizzing/foaming Heat Sound/light production Odor YES!
