1 Sergio Andreozzi Strategy and Policy Manager (EGI.eu)
Adapting OpenAIRE Services to Federated Infrastructures: the EGI Use Case Sergio Andreozzi Strategy and Policy Manager (EGI.eu) 21/11/2012 OpenAIRE Conference 2012

2 Outline European Grid Infrastructure (EGI)
Federated ICT resources providing large-scale computing to Virtual Research Communities Barriers to accurate tracking/sharing of scientific output Collaboration with OpenAIRE A win-win strategy 21/11/2012 OpenAIRE Conference 2012

3 EGI: Accelerating Digital Research
Extracting Knowledge from the Data Deluge Life Science Structural Biology: provide data analysis Structural Modeling: tools for NMR and SAXS techniques High-Energy Physics Large Hadron Collider: World’s largest particle accelerator Supports 8,000 researchers 1 billion CPU hours in the last 12 months 15PB of data created annually Health-care Diagnostic tools for the medical community E.g.: to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease in its early stages and track the progress of the symptoms over time See: 21/11/2012 OpenAIRE Conference 2012

8 Asia Pacific (9 partners)
EGI-InSPIRE Project Integrated Sustainable Pan-European Infrastructure for Researchers in Europe A 4 year project with €25M EC contribution Project cost €72M Total Effort ~€330M Effort: 9261PMs Project Partners (50) EGI.eu, 38 NGIs, 2 EIROs Asia Pacific (9 partners) 21/11/2012 OpenAIRE Conference 2012

9 EGI’s Contribution to the Europe 2020 strategy
EGI for the Digital Agenda for Europe Supports single digital market Stimulates competitiveness and interoperability Improves efficient spending Addresses grand challenges EGI for the Innovation Union Enables the digital European Research Area (ERA) Promotes skill development Enables worldwide collaboration EU2020 Digital Agenda for Europe Innovation Union 21/11/2012 OpenAIRE Conference 2012

10 How to Open Up the Scientific Output of EGI?
Federated Infrastructure Resource Providers: 351 centres federated into NGIs Resources: 470,000 logical CPUs, 143PB disk, 138PB Tape Resource centre autonomy in resource allocation to VOs Distributed research communities Users: 21,714 grouped into 233 Virtual Organisations (VOs) With EGI, today, researchers can easily share ICT resources, data, applications, VREs, training material. What about Scientific Output? 21/11/2012 OpenAIRE Conference 2012

11 Tracking Scientific Publications that Used EGI
Current Approach NGIs collect and periodically communicate to EGI.eu Partial results due to different level of maturity in the NGI established processes EGI Needs A sustainable long-term infrastructure needs more mature polices, processes and tools that ensure tracking of all publications for better demonstrating and opening the scientific output A dedicated task force investigated the matter during Jun-Oct and proposed recommendations 21/11/2012 OpenAIRE Conference 2012

12 Barriers to Better Scientific Publications Tracking in EGI
Lack of Awareness Researchers accessing EGI through dedicated science gateways may be not aware that they are using EGI Lack of Engagement Researchers aware of using EGI may not appreciate the importance of acknowledging EGI Lack of Services Lack of efficient/effective services for the manual/automatic tracking of scientific publications from distributed autonomous research communities 21/11/2012 OpenAIRE Conference 2012

13 3. Establish appropriate services
Proposed Actions 1. Increase Awareness Develop a “Cite EGI campaign” Liaise with science gateway developers to link to it 2. Stimulate engagement Reinforce the value added of EGI Mandate to mention EGI in publications through AUP Prize/review of citing papers 3. Establish appropriate services Should minimise human intervention Should be easy to use Should track e-infrastructure specific information 21/11/2012 OpenAIRE Conference 2012

14 Action 3: Establish Appropriate Services
Manual ingestion of publication metadata (by DOI) Manual deposit of publications: file and metadata Enabling inference of publications (by full-text mining) using/referring EGI Supporting enriched metadata: Infrastructure(s) that was used for the work Virtual Organisation(s) of the authors EGI scientific discipline(s) related to the work Support federated authentication Data curation from privileged users Statistics 21/11/2012 OpenAIRE Conference 2012

15 The OpenAIRE Opportunity
A well-established infrastructure: To promote Open Access To aggregate and link articles, datasets, projects, funding schemes To measure impact Why not adapt OpenAIRE to the needs of EGI? And of the e-infrastructures/research infrastructures in general? 21/11/2012 OpenAIRE Conference 2012

16 EGI Requirements vs. OpenAIRE
Manual ingestion of publication metadata (by DOI) Manual deposit of publications: file and metadata Enabling inference of publications (by full-text mining) using/referring EGI Supporting enriched metadata: Infrastructure(s) that was used for the work EGI scientific discipline(s) related to the work Virtual Organisation(s) of the authors Support federated authentication Data curation from privileged users Statistics  supported ½ partially  not supported 21/11/2012 OpenAIRE Conference 2012

17 Benefits A single access point to scientific publications
Accelerate the discovery, access and re-use Minimise burden on researchers Enables to demonstrate the scientific impact of: Infrastructures Virtual research collaborations Provides personalised aggregations and key statistics to understand the publications relevance 21/11/2012 OpenAIRE Conference 2012

18 Conclusion EGI Barriers Vision
sharing ICT resources and problem solving tools to accelerate the digital research of distributed virtual research collaborations and the ERA Barriers hinder the accurate tracking and sharing of scientific output Vision an augmented OpenAIRE personalized for an infrastructure as a key enabler for the access, use and re-use of scientific output 21/11/2012 OpenAIRE Conference 2012
