1 Purifying the Nation Due tomorrow…you have 3 options
Save to my S://In-box Bring on a USB drive to me You will research—then report back to the class—about a person who wanted to re-form (i.e. change) American society in the 1820s, 30s & 40s. High on the agenda was the abolition of slavery, women’s rights, temperance, the better treatment of criminals & the insane, public education , the establishment of utopian communities & religious reform. Sylvester Graham wanted to reform peoples’ diets and was also involved in the Temperance movement He invented Graham flour—a whole wheat, un-sifted, unbleached flour that was free from the (later to be found out as toxic) chemical additives common in the 1800s. He believed that a healthy diet could cure alcoholism. His followers came to be known as “Grahamites” were early American vegetarians—as he was the founder of the American Vegetarian Society. His diet-consciousness also had influence on such people as Harvey Kellogg.
