The first sign of leprosy maybe one or more depigmentation patches on the skin. These patches do not itch, are painless and do not produce scaled substances when scratched.

Leprosy only manifests in the form of hard nodule on the face, pinna of the ear or other parts of the body. They are like grains of coffee on the skin.

Treatment varies between 6 to 12 months depending on the clinical form. Treatment prescribed by the doctor should be respected. For patients with complications, the wearing of shoes adapted to patient, the wearing of gloves and sunshade eye glasses and cap are encouraged. Community care is also important. PREVENTION: Bath with water and soap, Do early diagnosis, Refer suspected cases to health units, Follow up treatment and break transmission chain. FIN

41 Don’t wait act now. Adopt a good body and environmental hygiene. Refer all suspected cases of tropical neglected diseases to the closest health unit. In case of any suspected sign on your skin go to a community relay agent or a health personnel for consultation. Treatments for neglected tropical diseases are available, efficient and are free of charge.
