2 Background On July 5, 1811, Venezuela declared its independence from Spain Venezuelan colonists rebelled against high taxes and a lack of self-rule The colonists claimed independence as Napoleon invaded Spain This threatened Spain’s ability to govern its colonies in the Americas but Spain resisted The war for self-government continued for more than a decade By the 20th century, most Latin American countries had gained independence from colonial powers

3 What happened? The Venezuelan Revolution was started as a way to create an independent republic, much like lots of other revolutions similarly in the same time period. The revolution was started because of the treacherous conditions the Spanish rule put on the hacendados (the planter elite) and the creole (native to America). This, along with the slave population asking for freedom, and the need for the hacendados to sell cocoa and crops on a global scale for a free economy, was why they declared independence. Simon Bolivar, a wealthy creole, found himself inspired by the ideas of the Enlightenment and decided to head to Europe to find support for his revolution while Napoleon seeked invasion of Spain all in about

4 What happened? cont. Bolivar, along with Francisco de Miranda, a Venezuelan living in Europe, revolted against their repressive government and won against Spanish Royalist army The legislation and mercantilist pressure that Spain put on Venezuela was lifted on trade and food. Short lived because of Napoleon's fall, but in 1819, it was permanently liberated, changing the whole society. Affected the tax and interregional trade Social order of peninsulares and mestizos stays the same to the day. After, Simon Bolivar marched up to Peru and helped others gain independence there. Venezuela was still economically devastated and had trouble getting itself back in to a good state shape

5 Conclusion/Effects Spain attempted to reconquer Venezuela when Napoleon fell in 1814 and slavery and social classes were restored briefly Pushed Spain out again 1823 The Battle of Lake Maracaibo Bolivar attempted to help liberate other parts of South America (Peru and Bolivia) after winning Venezuela’s battles against the Spanish
