2 Background Atoms will BOND in order to have a full outer energy level WANT TO BE HAPPY    One way atoms do this is by the transfer of electrons from one atom to another This occurs between a METAL and a NONMETAL

3 Definitions Chemical Bonding- atoms join together to create a different compound Ionic Bonding- bonding that involves the transfer of electrons (metal with nonmetal) Stop and add metal/nonmetal to your best friend! (It’s a win-win situation! One atom gives off electrons so that its lower shell is full. The other atom receives electrons so that it can fill its outer shell)

4 Ions – Isn’t It Ionic? When atoms transfer electrons, the charge of the atom is changed A charged atom is called an ion (hence the name “ionic bond”) If an atom gains electrons, it becomes negatively charged. Called Anions (ide) If an atom loses electrons, it becomes positively charged. Called Cations (ion)

5 Is it an Ion? To determine a particles charge, you must compare the number of protons with the number of electrons. Use the diagram on your worksheet and your periodic table to answer the questions on your worksheet.
