1 Summarizing A Text

2 Summarizing happens daily
What happened at your game over the weekend? What did you do yesterday when you went home? What is Finding Dory about?

3 How to summarize video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGWO1ldEhtQ
After watching the video, what is one thing that you think you need to change about your summary? OR What is something new you learned from the video?

4 Summarizing reminders
Your audience/reader is someone who has not read the text you are summarizing. You must include the main points But not too many details (you don’t want to overwhelm your reader)

5 Summarizing structure
Topic sentence MUST include the title of the text you are summarizing (and possibly the author) Supporting sentences The main details of the text Paraphrase: NO DIRECT QUOTES! This should be in your own words! Remain objective: do not include your opinion Concluding sentence Strong statement about the text or actions of those involved, but not your opinion.

6 My summary The text “On Doomed Flight, Passengers Vowed to Perish Fighting” focuses on the courageous acts of the passengers on flight 93 during the September 11 terrorist attacks. Passengers quickly realized on that morning flight that something was wrong when three men hijacked the plane, stabbing one passenger to death, threatening that there was a bomb on board, and presumably killing the pilots. After calling loved ones and 911 dispatchers from the plane and learning of the other hijacked planes that were used to attack the World Trade Center buildings, passengers, led by Jeremy Glick and Thomas Burnett, decided that they had no other option than to fight back against the hijackers. The passengers prevented the terrorists from completing their mission of flying into a national landmark, instead sacrificing themselves and crashing the plane in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Family and friends are left behind with voic s and final conversations, and the hope that their loved one died a hero.
