3 Interest Groups A group of people who share a common goal and organize to influence the government. Different than political parties as they do not nominate candidates for office Usually concerned with only a few specific issues and are not interested in getting members to join who do not agree with their views. Examples: National Association of Manufacturers, United Auto Workers, American Bar Association, American Medical Association

4 Kinds of Interest Groups
Business and Labor Groups – usually concerned with economic issues Agricultural Groups – usually concerned with farming and the interests of farmers Professional Associations (lawyers, doctors, etc.) – concerned with policies concerning that profession Environmental Interest Groups – usually concerned with policies concerning the environment Public-Interest Groups – concerned with issues affecting the general population, i.e. abortion, gun laws, civil rights, etc.

5 Lobbyists Specific members of interest groups who actually meet with senators and representatives face-to-face in order to influence policies This is a widely used and quite effective technique

6 What do they really matter?
Imagine you are trying to get a hold of your local representative concerning local gun laws. You can mail/ that representative. So can everyone else living in the area. How likely is it that your representative will ever read your letter?

7 Now imagine that you are part of a reputable and well-known group, which gathers together and sends the representative a long, well- drafted letter. How likely is it that your representative will read that letter? Interest Groups bridge the gap. They are made up of people who care so much about the policies being enacted that they band together and influence politicians.

8 PROJECT TIME !!!! (WOOOOOHOOO!!!!!)
That’s right, get into your groups for your Political Party project and begin working on the Task of the Day! Today’s task: Make an advertisement!
