1 Design and research skills
Unit 2 Design and research skills

2 Mistakes students make
Research What is it? Why is it important? Mistakes students make

3 What is it? Individually write up a list of words / phases (no shorter than 5) In groups of 5 write a comprehensive list (indicate how many times a word was used and put the most used at the top and work down) Log on to worditout.com/ and generate a word cloud – please upload this to your website under the heading of Research If Learning has been said by the group 5 times you will need to write it 5 times in order for the cloud to work (I will go through how to upload images if needed – let me know)

4 Why is it important Why would we ask you to research on this course?
What do you think you will be researching? Do you think research is important? Why? What is the most popular research site?

5 Mistakes students make

6 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:List_of_hoaxes_on_Wikipedia
Hyperlink on picture – go through the hoax sites to prove that wiki is not reliable

7 NEVER reference slide share – Why?
It can be other students work (incorrect) It isn’t reliable as a source of research

8 How to present your research
Charts Infographics (we will show you these later in the unit) Written reports Illustrations Voice / video recording You can present your findings in the most creative way for you BUT EVERYTHING must be referenced. NB: Please don’t use PowerPoint as you won’t be able to fit all the information on in a professional way.

9 Referencing You will be asked to HARVARD reference EVERYTHING you do – not just in this unit but in ALL your productions. All pieces of research from websites, YouTube, books, s, blogs & journals The reason we ask you to do this is due to COPYRIGHT and PLAGERISM – failure to reference your research could result in a failed grade at best but could lead to suspension from college or the exam board excluding you from the course.

10 Harvard referencing Neil's toolbox is an easy way to make sure you reference everything correctly from YouTube to s to books and journals At the end of each piece of research please make sure there is a reference page using this resource to help you. Neils toolbox is hyperlinked

11 Research task MOON LANDING
A new documentary has been commissioned on the Moon Landing. The aim is to uncover the truth about this historical event. Did it happen? Truth or conspiracy? Was it a TV publicity stunt / a government campaign or did it actually happen? Without researching it – what do you know about the Moon Landing? Who believes it happened and who thinks it a hoax? Why? – Do you have facts to back this up? Research task Put notes on board – for and against arguments and FACTS that they have MOON LANDING

12 Research task MOON LANDING
For the rest of the lesson you are going to work in groups. Those who believe and those who don’t. Next lesson we will start the lesson with a ‘debate’ based on your research and Facts See how much you can research and learn that proves your theory Make sure ALL resources are reliable and Harvard reference them Research the topic first – dates, astronauts, name of the shuttle, where it launched from, how many people watched it on TV etc… Then get quotes, pictures, videos and articles that prove your theory – back up your research with second opinions on the same topic. Upload your findings and then next week you will get into 2 groups and have a debate – your research will be marked individually however Research task Put notes on board – for and against arguments and FACTS that they have MOON LANDING
